Suya fire ignited fuel of crashed Lagos tanker – LASEMA

The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency has said the inferno that razed several shops and houses in the Idimu area in Lagos was caused by the fire of a Suya(roasted peppery meat) seller, which ignited the content spilling out of a fuel tanker. The truck had crashed along the Egbeda-Idimu road around midnight on Friday. Head of Operations, LASEMA, Femi Giwa, said this at the scene of the crash on Saturday. Giwa, who explained that 34 shops and 70 houses “were affected” by the tanker fire, said after the fuel truck crashed, it spilled its contents into the surrounding areas but burst into flames when the fuel flowed into the Suya seller’s spot. He said 10 houses out of the affected buildings were “completely destroyed”. He added that two fully-loaded tankers as well as some commercial bus drivers had attempted to outrun one another along Idimu Road. “The tanker at the back, that is the second one, fell and crashed into a building, but the impa...

Toll rises in Ghana petrol station blast

A huge explosion at a petrol station in Ghana’s capital Accra has killed at least 90 people and set alight neighbouring buildings after floods swept stored fuel into a nearby fire, according to authorities. The blast happened on Thursday as dozens of people sought shelter at the petrol station and in nearby shops in central Accra to escape the torrential rains. The disaster raised anew concerns over the city’s inadequate infrastructure. Al Jazeera’s Ama Boateng, reporting from Accra, said the city and the rest of Ghana have been experiencing torrential rains. “This is a very busy area of Accra. Lots of people. Lots of car traffic. And because of the heavy rains people gathered at this gas station to seek shelter and this explosion happened,” she said. TV footage showed corpses being piled into the back of a pickup vehicle and other charred bodies trapped amid the debris. Floodwaters around the site hampered rescue and recovery efforts. Officials at t...

Bomb Blast Rocks Yola Market, Many Feared Dead

A bomb blast suspected to be from a suicide bomber has occurred in Yola, the capital city of Adamawa state, north east Nigeria. A resident of the town, Salihu Aliyu, told PREMIUM TIMES that the blast happened in front of the Jimeta main market at about 7:45pm. “We just finished observing the Maghrib prayer when we heard a loud blast in the direction of the market,” he said. He said the casualty figure is likely to be high because the explosion occurred as many traders closed their shops, and started rushing home. “You know many traders also come out of the market and display their wares outside the main market to also observe the night market,” he said. “There was even traffic gridlock in the area with many Keke Napep operators jostling for passengers when the bomb exploded.” One witness said at least 10 people were killed and about 30 injured. The police could not be reached immediately. Details later …

Check Out The Longest Equation Known To Man

Image
The standard what? The Standard Model is the current Theory which governs all known strong and electroweak interactions. This includes basically everything that has EVER been measured by humans (sans gravity). It really is the best Theory that we have. It has been fantastically successful in predicting and explaining data; there are no obvious or overt violations of this Theory. Nerds can go read (or add more information :/) about it here. How long did it take to type? In it's current form, the actual equation have took about four hours (spread over almost a week) to write into a file using LaTeX. And sadly, the typist think there is a sign error somewhere, but he just don't have the energy to hunt it down.

Ekiti State Governor, Ayodele Fayose, on Thursday bade farewell to the outgoing members of the House of Assembly, insisting that he had forgiven them for attempting to remove him from office. Fayose said this in a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Idowu Adelusi, even as the Assembly’s tenure will expire on Friday. Ekiti State had been under siege for the past three days as thugs said to be loyal to Fayose blocked all roads leading to the Assembly complex to prevent the 19 All Progressives Congress lawmakers from sitting with the aim of impeaching him. Fayose lamented how things ended between him and the lawmakers but promised that they would not be victimised after leaving office. He said, “The last few months have been traumatic, especially this week. I was not given room for concentration, but I had left the battle for God to fight. I told those planning to impeach me that they will succeed‎ if they can impeach God. “I did not bring myself back t...

APC NWC, lawmakers-elect meet today over N’Assembly leadership

Image
There are strong indications that the All Progressives Congress National Working Committee will on Thursday (today) direct its National Assembly members-elect to pick consensus candidates for the senate presidency and the speakership of the House of Representatives. It was reliably gathered on Wednesday in Abuja that the issue of leadership of the eighth National Assembly would be a part of the agenda of the APC NWC’s meetings with senators-elect and their counterparts for the House. A top member of the NWC, who confided in The PUNCH, said that the decision to pick consensus candidates was part of efforts to prevent the opposition Peoples Democratic Party from controlling the eighth National Assembly. But a key APC members-elect who learnt of the development   on Wednesday feared that failure to agree on consensus candidates could further divide his colleagues and give the PDP an opportunity to play a major role in determining who would emerge as the speaker and the s...

Court orders NDLEA to suspend action on Kashamu

A Federal High Court in Lagos has asked the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency to suspend all actions on the move to extradite the Ogun East Senator-elect, Mr. Buruji Kashamu, to the United States to face trial on alleged drug-trafficking offences. The presiding judge, Justice Ibrahim Buba, while adjourning hearing in all pending applications on the subject matter till June 19, said on Thursday that status quo must be maintained till all the applications were decided one way or the other. Pending before Buba is the committal suit filed by  Kashamu against the Attorney General of the Federation and the Chairman of  NDLEA, citing them for contempt of court. In response, the NDLEA has filed preliminary objection challenging the jurisdiction of the court to entertain the matter. Besides, the anti-narcotic agency is seeking the reversal of the court order of May 26 which directed it to withdraw more than 50 of his operatives which had laid siege to Kashamu’s house. At ...

My critics giving excuses for their defeat – Rivers REC

The Rivers State Resident Electoral Commissioner, Mrs. Gesila Khan, has said the criticisms against her before, during and after the 2015 controversial elections in the state mean nothing to her. Khan said those criticising her did so because they lost the elections, adding that it was normal for losers to give excuses on why they lost. Widespread criticisms had trailed the conduct and outcome of the general elections in the state, especially from members and supporters of the All Progressives Congress. But speaking on Thursday in Port Harcourt shortly after receiving an award of merit from the Joint Assembly of Rivers State Youths, the state REC said she did her best in conducting the 2015 elections in the state, describing the exercise as “very successful”. Explaining that she knew that Rivers State would be tough to handle, Khan explained that should would have avoided her transfer to the state if she could, having served in Delta, another tough state to handle during...
