Determined to provide homes for its residents, Lagos State Governor Babatunde Fashola yesterday said his administration had introduced Rent-to Own Scheme in the on-going Lagos Home Ownership Mortgage Scheme. The governor, who revealed this at a special interactive session with artisans, transporters and traders in the state at the Blue Roof LTV 8, Agidingbi, Ikeja, said the initiative was to encourage residents in the informal sector to participate in the housing scheme. Fashola said research conducted by his team had revealed that traders, transport operators, traders, bricklayers, brick makers, fashion designers and others in the informal sector could conveniently pay for the homes located across the state. He added that investigations recently carried out by his government had shown that most people in the informal sector could also afford the mortgage scheme, by prudently deploying their monthly income and profits. Edo State Governor Adams Oshiomole yesterday accused the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) of resorting to politics of intimidation in order to destabilise the state ahead of the 2015 general elections. The governor who spoke to Journalists after the Council of State meeting at the Presidential Villa in Abuja noted that the PDP ended up revealing their true intent when the party alleged that he was nursing the ambition of contesting the vice presidency. He noted, however, that even if he decides to contest for the presidency, the PDP cannot intimidate him, adding that he has the right to do so if he was convinced. The FIFA Emergency Committee has decided Wednesday to suspend the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) with immediate effect, on account of government interference. Article 13, par. 1 and article 17, par. 1 of the FIFA Statutes oblige member associations to manage their affairs independently and with no influence from third parties. The decision follows a letter sent by FIFA to the NFF on 4 July, in which it expressed its great concern after the NFF was served with court proceedings and consequently an order preventing the president of the NFF, the NFF Executive Committee members and the NFF Congress from running the affairs of Nigerian football was granted by a High Court of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. The said court order compelled the Nigerian Minister of Sports, Tamino Danagogo to appoint a senior member of the civil service to manage the NFF until the matter was heard in court, without giving any date for such a hearing. A former governor of Osun State, Prince Olagunsoye Oyinlola, has said that he remains the national secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party. He described as utter falsehood reports that he had been asked by the Peoples Democratic Party to drop his claim to the national secretary position of the party. A student was reportedly shot in the head by unidentified gunmen on Monday at the King Jaja Hall area of the University of Lagos, Lagos State. The student who was identified as Sapara, a final year student of Philosophy, had his face covered in blood after a bullet was said to have scraped the side of his head. He was subsequently taken to the Lagos University Teaching Hospital, Idi-Araba, and official report had it that he was in stable condition. The incident however led to chaos as students were seen running in different directions after the gunshot was heard. Eyewitnesses say they saw a car speed off after the shooting, noting that the perpetrators might have carried out the attack from there. Israel's intense bombardment of the Gaza Strip has killed at least 27 people and wounded 130 others, Palestinian officials have said. Israel on Tuesday said it was ready for a long-term offensive against Hamas in the Palestinian territory after a surge in rocket attacks on Israeli towns. "We are preparing for a battle against Hamas which will not end within a few days," Defence Minister Moshe Yaalon said in a statement.
