Buhari appoints new Niger Delta Amnesty coordinator

President Muhammadu Buhari has approved the appointment of Brigadier-General P.T. Boroh (rtd.) as the Coordinator of the Amnesty Programme for former Niger Delta militants.

Brig. Boroh, whose appointment takes immediate effect, is to take over the responsibilities of the former Special Adviser to President Jonathan on Niger Delta who also doubled as Coordinator of the Amnesty Programme, a statement by Femi Adesina, the President’s spokesperson said.

The appointment of a new Coordinator for the Amnesty Programme is expected to lead to the speedy resolution of recent hitches in its implementation such as the non-payment of outstanding allowances to ex-militants.

Osun Election: Nine Political Parties Adopt Omisore

Nine out of the 20 political parties contesting the August 9 Osun State governorship election on Wednesday adopted the Peoples Democratic Party candidate, Senator Iyiola Omisore, as their candidate in the election. The parties are: the Accord Party, the All Progressives Grand Alliance, the Democratic Peoples Party, the Action Alliance, the Peoples Party of Nigeria, the Social Democratic Party, the Unity Party of Nigeria, the Kowa Party, and the Advance Congress of Democrats. The Director-General Iyiola Omisore Campaign Organisation, Mr. Lere Oyewumi, who presented the state chairmen of the parties at an event, which was held at the PDP secretariat Osogbo, said the development was an indication that Omisore was the candidate to beat in the election. Mixed reactions trail 8th National Assembly elections

Reactions trailed the emergence of Sen. Bukola Saraki as the 8th Senate President and the election of other principal officers of the National Assembly. In Ibadan, Oyo State, Sen. Lekan Balogun, a Chieftain of PDP, described the emergence of Saraki as the new Senate president as a good development for democracy. He said “the leadership of the Senate is very important for the country’s politics.” NAN reports that apart from Saraki, Sen. Ike Ekweremadu also emerged as Deputy Senate President respectively.
