19-yr-old, who tested HIV-positive after she was gang-raped, seeks justice

Image
Helen (surname withheld) will be 20 years on October 10. But she now bears a burden that is too heavy for her age. She was gang-raped in January this year and was diagnosed with HIV last month. Due to the heart-rending experience and the medical diagnosis that followed, the once cheerful and vivacious Helen now wears a long face as she carries with her the psychological burden of the experience. After secondary school in 2008, Helen wanted to further her education, but being the fifth of 11 children comes with its own challenge. “Na the condition of no money, na im prevent me from going further,” said Helen when asked why she had not bothered to continue her education. Despite her background, Helen was unperturbed. Determined that she would return to school some day, she began working as a cleaner in a big firm at Lekki, Lagos, from where she hoped to save for school. She had worked there for almost a year before the tragic episode that altered her life dramatically took place. It

'Fuji music is very dangerous' - Singer Etcetera writes

Image
Singer turned Punch Columnist Etcetera writes on why Fuji music is dangerous. Read below... Fuji music and I got divorced at a street carnival on October 1st, 2010. I just couldn’t take it anymore and thought it best that we went our separate ways. I guess the feeling was mutual because that was the same day I recovered my sanity and my personal cool. What would I become if I wasn’t aware of myself anymore? Unlike many adults, I have no stomach for music that makes me want to vandalize my home and for some crazy reasons; I have discovered that some fuji songs that are popular right now make you want to assess your mental state. The simple truth is one can’t remember any of such songs getting posted daily on blogs. I can only recognise a handful of artistes mentioned by some die-hard and unrepentant fanatics in my hood. There was a period in time when it was actually important to know who was who, and who was better than the other lyrically or vocally. Then, having fuji songs on yo

Speaking with a Punch reporter, Oritse Femi said he charges N3m per show and he could do 20states in a row, making him earn about N60m per brand concert. Here is how he explained it in his own words; “Things have definitely changed. Nowadays, I don’t charge less than N3m to perform at a concert. Sometimes the concerts are funded by multinational companies and we have to tour 20 states. Multiply N3m by 20 states and you will understand what I am saying. The situation has indeed improved”. He bagged 4 nominations at the just released Nigeria Entertainment Awards 2014 Nominees List

Image
Former Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Victor Attah, has challenged the incumbent, Governor Godswill Akpabio, to publish how much he has paid him (Mr. Attah) and past leaders of the state as pension. This followed claims by Mr. Akpabio that the government had been spending huge resources in taking care of former governors as well as deputy governors and their spouses. Mr. Attah, who spoke in a telephone interview with PREMIUM TIMES on Friday, also berated journalists, especially those who recently interviewed the Akwa Ibom state governor, for not asking Mr. Akpabio pertinent questions about his management of the state resources. He said, “If Godswill Akpabio says he conceived the new law to put a ceiling to the expenses made on previous leaders of the state, somebody should have had the guts to ask him how much he has been paying to the past leaders. “You journalists are afraid of Godswill Akpabio and that is why you have always shied away from asking some pertinent questions.”

DHQ Alleges Plot Against Military

THE Defence Headquarters on Friday said it had got wind of a fresh plan by some interest groups to embark on a renewed campaign aimed at attracting international condemnation and indictment of the Nigerian military and its operations in the northern part of the country. According to a statement by the Director of Defence Information, Major-General Chris Olukolade, the said campaign is to rely heavily on doctored and falsified audio-visual materials, some of which are already trending in the social media. This, it said, would be coordinated and funded by a prominent political leader whose state is presently under the state of emergency. The statement read: “The details of the plan, which is already being fine-tuned by a group of media professionals, (are) to be presented for the final ratification and funding by the political figure. The design is expected to forcefully whip up sentiments of genocide allegedly targeted against a particular religious group. “The planners of this cr

Arsenal Manager Has Penned A New 3 Year deal With The Club

Image
Arsenal Manager Arsene Wenger has no intention of leaving the Emirates this season or the next if reports in the media are true. British Media reports that the Frenchman has signed a new three year-deal that will keep him at the club until 2017. The deal is believed to be worth £24million. There were fresh concerns over the former Monaco coach staying at the club after the end of last season; a season that brought him 'word to mouth' with Chelsea's Jose Mourinho where the Portuguese coach tagged him a 'specialist at failure' shortly before the elimination of Arsenal at the hands of Bayern Munich in the second round of the UEFA Champions League. However, winning the FA Cup the fifth time since he took over the helms at the club with an almost 'de-motivated' team has convinced others especially Mourinho who ended the season without any silverware that Arsene Wenger is not a failure. The club has also restored confidence in the 64 year old Wenger who

'Old women still have sexual urges' - actress Taiwo Ajai-Lycett says

Image
While promoting her stage play, Hear Word, where she plays a sexually active old woman, veteran actress Taiwo Ajai-Lycett, said old people still enjoy sex and some are quite sexually active. "I am an old woman in the play and in real life. I am 73. The society doesn't think older women exist anymore, nobody thinks they feel anything. The people around old women never realize they are going through a turmoil, nobody cares about them. So what I am trying to portray is that it's not over until it is over. That an old woman is still alive in more ways than one, they still have sexual urges, people forget an old woman is human. An old woman enjoys her sexual life more when she no longer thinks about children's school fees, when the children have all gone to their husband's houses or in some cases the boys have married and it remains only the old woman and her husband. It never crosses our mind that these old parents can still get on whenever they like. Do you know th
