Photo: Very Clean River in China Turns Red Overnight

Image
A river in China deemed clean enough to drink mysteriously turned red overnight, shocking residents and officials. Residents of the area claim the phenomenon has never happened before, and the colour change was not caused by an industrial contamination. The river is located in Xinmeizhou village, Cangnan County in eastern China’s Zhejiang province. A local told the Daily Express that, the water looked normal at 4 am, “but then suddenly, within the space of a few minutes, the water started turning darker and eventually was completely red.” The local said they used to catch fishes as well as drink the water because it was normally good. China Radio International reports that Wenzhou Environmental Protection Bureau inspectors have taken samples for analysis. A professor of Limnology (the study of inland waters) at the University of Wisconsin Emily Stanley told LiveScience that “It looks like a pollutant phenomenon. Water bodies that have turned red very fast in the past have

Gaza City - At least 100 Gazans have been killed in Israeli bombardment on Tuesday, Gaza officials have said, hours after shells hit the enclave's only power station. A thick column of black smoke was seen rising from the power station on Tuesday, mingling with other plumes sent into the air by Israeli shelling. The AFP news agency reported that one air raid alone in northern Gaza had killed 10 people on Tuesday. Bombs hit the power station's generator. Jamal Dardasawi, a spokesman for the electricity distribution company, warned that Gaza would be engulfed in "a humanitarian crisis within hours" if no immediate action was taken to secure power supplies. "This will affect hospitals

Image
Making this revelation in an exclusive interview with Saturday Sun in Lagos on Wednesday, leader and spokesman, Witches and Wizards Association of Nigeria, (WITZAN), Dr. Okhue Iboi said the emergency meeting held by his members was not only aimed at discussing the various challenges confronting the nation but also to chart a way forward. “Witches and Wizards in Nigeria are deeply worried by what is going on in the country especially Boko Haram insurgency. As stakeholders in the Nigerian project, we can no longer afford to fold our hands while the nation burns. Enough is enough”, he declared. According to him, Shekau will be captured before the end of December, and paraded on the streets of Abuja and Maiduguri for the whole world to see. “We witches and wizards in Nigeria have sealed the fate of Shekau. Ban Ki-moon condemns killing of civilians by Israel as UN Security Council prepares to meet on Gaza. UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has condemned the killing of dozens of Palestinians in the Gaza Strip by Israeli shelling as an "atrocious action" and called for an immediate end to almost two weeks of fighting. Ban's comments on Sunday came ahead of a UN Security Council emergency meeting on Gaza at 01:30 GMT On Monday on the request of Jordan. It also comes as US Secretary of State John Kerry is heading back to the Middle East as the Obama administration attempts to bolster regional efforts to reach a cease-fire. The State Department said Kerry would leave on Monday for Egypt where he will join diplomatic efforts to resume a truce that had been agreed to in November 2012. Ban, in Doha on the first leg of a Middle East tour to try to end the bloodshed that has cost more than 400 lives, met Qatar's Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani, Palestinian Presid

FIFA lifts ban on Nigeria

Image
FIFA has lifted the ban it placed on Nigeria on July 9th after a high court sitting in Jos sacked the President of the Nigerian Football Federation, NFF, Aminu Maigari and other board members. FIFA had frowned at the court ruling, stating that the move was a government interference in football activities which is against its policy. FIFA then directed that a new court order reinstating Maigari and other NFF executives be obtained before it can lift the ban. The new court order reinstating the NFF President and other executives was obtained two days ago, Tuesday July 15th, hence the lifting of the ban today. Maigari and his board will resume their duties tomorrow and stay there until next month's elections when they could be sacked through the ballot, in line with FIFA's policies.

Sad Fact: List of civilian planes shot down From 1973 till date

Since 1973, at least five passenger planes have been shot down: • Libyan Arab Airlines Flight 114 -- On February 21, 1973, 108 of 113 people aboard a Libyan Arab Airlines flight were killed when Israeli fighters shot down the Boeing 727-200 after it strayed into the airspace of the Sinai Desert, then under Israeli control. • Korean Air Lines Flight 007 -- On September 1, 1983, 239 people aboard a Korean Air Lines flight bound from New York to Seoul were killed when the passenger jet was shot down by Soviet fighters during the Cold War. KAL Flight 007 had veered off course and into Soviet territory, and a pair of fighter jets were dispatched to intercept the perceived intruder. U.S. Rep. Larry McDonald of Georgia was among the passengers. The downing produced a giant outcry at the time, though the full facts did not become known until after the Cold War's end. • Iran Air Flight 655 -- On July 3, 1988, in the volatile Persian Gulf, the USS Vincennes shot down an Iran Air Airb

Rising from a closed door meeting with the president and governors under the PDP platform, House leader, Hon. We deliberated on issues affecting our party and on our own we decided to pass a vote of confidence on Mr. President and also endorse him for a second term.” Asked whether the President accepted to contest, she said, “We did the endorsement and we are urging him to run for second term.” Asked why the Speaker of the House, Aminu Tambuwal was absent at t

Nasarawa Assembly serves Governor impeachment notice

Lawmakers at the Nasarawa State House of Assembly Monday passed a motion directing the clerk of the House to serve Governor Umaru Tanko Al-Makura with an impeachment notice. Sixteen of the 24 members rushed back from an ongoing recess and held a plenary session that lasted only about 12 minutes where they discussed only one item – the impeachment process, which was raised under Matters of Public Interest. The House said the impeachment process became necessary after a report of a recent probe by an adhoc comnittee of the House indicted AlMakura over alleged “gross misconduct” and “Abuse of Office.” Twenty of the 24 members; all of them members of the PDP signed the impeachment. The House resolved and directed the clerk to process and to serve the Governor with an impeachment notice, and to copy the judiciary to commence judicial processes towards the planned impeachment. Speaker Musa Ahmed Mohammed who explained the urgency and importance of the issue recalled members back from th

Israel to mull Egypt ceasefire plan for Gaza

Security cabinet to discuss Cairo initiative to end Gaza violence that has left at least 187 Palestinians dead. Benjamin Netanyahu, Israel's prime minister, is to convene his security cabinet to discuss an Egyptian-proposed ceasefire in the Gaza conflict, an Israeli official has said. The official told the Reuters news agency that the meeting will take place later on Tuesday. The proposed truce would start on Tuesday morning, and be followed by talks on a long-term ceasefire. Khaled al-Batch, a senior leader of the Islamic Jihad armed group, said that the group welcomed "Egypt's role and efforts to end the Israeli aggression and defend the Palestinian people" but will not accept the ceasefire without conditions. "It is not acceptable to start observing a ceasefire for short term then negotiate the terms. We have experienced this in the past and it has failed," he said. "What is needed now is to agree on the demands of the Palestinian people,

NUT Threatens Nationwide Strike Over Minimum Wage

National leadership of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) yesterday threatened to embark on a nation-wide industrial strike if teachers in unity schools across the country were not paid their national minimum wage and the 27.5 per cent teachers peculiar allowance by the federal government. Rising from the 56th national delegates conference of the union in Uyo, the Akwa Ibom State capital, the leadership of the union lauded the sagacity of teachers in the Unity schools for remaining law abiding while awaiting justice to be done. The NUT seriously frowned that since 2008 about seven years ago that the Teachers allowance scheme came to effect, the federal government has continued to remain silent on effecting or implementing the scheme. Briefing newsmen at the end of the four-day conference, the re-elected national president of the union, Comrade Michael Alogba Olukoya said the national executive of the union has resolved to meet with the leadership of the unity schools on how to t

Germany crowned world champions

Mario Gotze's goal in the second-half of extra time seals a 1-0 win for Germany over Argentina in the World Cup final. With two quick touches, Mario Goetze ended Germany's 24-year wait for another World Cup title. Goetze scored the winning goal in extra time to give Germany a 1-0 victory over Argentina on Sunday in a tight and tense World Cup final that came down to one piece of individual skill. Goetze controlled a cross with his chest in the 113th minute and in one fluid motion volleyed the ball past goalkeeper Sergio Romero and inside the far post. It was a goal that gave Germany their fourth World Cup title in their eighth final, and left Argentina star Lionel Messi still walking in the shadow of his compatriot Diego Maradona, who led his country to the 1986 title. Earlier, Gonzalo Higuain wasted an opportunity by firing wide when gifted a chance in a one-on-one with Neuer, and later had a goal ruled out for offside. Germany defender Benedikt Hoewedes hit the p

S Africa metal workers 'to intensify' strike

Biggest union rejects 10 percent pay-raise offer, with industrial action costing country about $30m a day. South Africa's engineering and metal workers union has rejected a 10 percent pay-raise offer from employers, calling on its 220,000 striking members in the sector to intensify strike action. Irvin Jim, general secretary of the National Union of Metalworkers in South Africa (NUMSA), the country's biggest trade union, said the workers would continue with indefinite strike action. "We are making a very clear statement that the strike continues and we call on our members to intensify the strike," Jim said.  "Should the employers continue with their reckless shenanigans and unreasonable demands, we might be left with no option but to call for targeted solidarity in all our sectors. This is seriously under consideration." Workers have already been off work for the past two weeks. Employers have offered a 10 percent increase this year, 9

Israeli raids on Gaza enter seventh day

Israel keeps up deadly air strikes and artillery fire as Gazans flee the north and diplomatic impetus grows. Israel has hit the Gaza Strip with air strikes and artillery fire on the seventh day of its offensive and as diplomatic efforts to halt the bloodshed intensified. Aircraft struck three training facilities of Hamas's military wing, the Qassam Brigades, around the coastal territory early on Monday, but caused no casualties, medics and eyewitnesses said. They also hit buildings in Gaza City, Deir el-Balah in the southern part of the strip, and in the northern town of Jabaliya, injuring an unspecified number of people. There was shelling reported in Beit Lahiya, in the far north of the strip, where Israel had earlier warned residents of an impending assault. World powers prepared to meet over the spiralling violence as the Palestinian death toll from the Israeli air campaign hit 172 with another 1,230 people wounded, the emergency services said. Fearing for their liv

Nigerians Urged To Support FG’s Plans To Privatise National Refineries

The Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria (IPMAN) on Saturday urged Nigerians to support the Federal Government’s plan to privatise the nation’s refineries. Mr Ajayi Adebayo, new Chairman of IPMAN, Ejigbo Satellite depot branch, made the call during interview with News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos. He said privatising the refineries would help to address the incessant scarcity of petroleum products and also encourage the private sector to participate in building their refineries. “I am in support of government’s plan to privatise the refineries by selling those plants to private investors who have the technical-know-how and effective managerial structure to run them. “Privatising the refineries will serve the country better in the export of refined petroleum products. “That is why l am urging Nigerians to support the government’s effort in privatising our refineries for optimum production as well as revenue generation for the economy’’, he said. Netherlands bag third-place consolation

RVP, Blind and Wijnaldum on target for the Dutch as Brazil are humbled in the World Cup third-place playoff. Another ragged defensive display by Brazil allowed the Netherlands to stroll to a 3-0 victory in the World Cup third-place playoff match as the hosts ended the tournament in depressing fashion. The Dutch had failed to score in the four hours of their previous two knockout games but were gifted two goals in the opening 16 minutes. The first came when Thiago Silva, back from suspension, was lucky to escape a red card as he pulled back Arjen Robben in the area and Robin van Persie converted the penalty after three minutes. A terrible clearance header by David Luiz then dropped invitingly for Daley Blind to hammer in the second and Brazil, with six changes to the team humiliated 7-1 by Germany in the semi-finals, rarely looked like getting back into the game with another disjointed performance. They did exert some pressure in the second half but still failed to seriously te

Israel bomb hits disabled centre in Gaza

Rehabilitation centre hit on fifth day of Israel's aerial offensive on Hamas, which PM Netanyahu says will not stop. At least four people have been reported killed in a bomb strike on a rehabilitation centre for the disabled in Gaza, medical sources say, as the toll from Israel's bombardment of the Palestinian territory reaches 151. Three patients and a nurse were killed in the explosion on Saturday in Jabaliya, the sources told Our Correspondence. They were among a dozen people killed in overnight raids, as Israel's campaign entered its fifth day. Video footage of the aftermath of the attack, obtained by the Reuters news agency, showed victims being taken to hospital for injuries including severe burns. The AFP news agency also reported on Saturday that two people had been killed in an explosion at a charitable association for the disabled in Beit Lahiya, three deaths in the eastern Tufah area of Gaza City, and three others killed in western Gaza City. Gaza toll soars as Israeli raids continue

At least 111 Palestinians killed by airstrikes as Israel brushes off pressure for ceasefire. Israel's aerial bombardment of Gaza has claimed its 118th Palestinian life as Hamas continued to launch rockets into central Israel and the United States offered to help broker a truce. Diplomatic efforts failed to make any headway, with US President Barack Obama phoning Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. "The United States remains prepared to facilitate a cessation of hostilities," the White House said. But Netanyahu remained resolute, saying he would not end his campaign until he achieved his goal of stopping the Hamas fire. "No international pressure will prevent us from striking, with all force, against the terrorist organisation which calls for our destruction," he told a news conference in Tel Aviv. Benjamin Netanyahu brushed off a question about possible ceasefire efforts, signaling there was no end in sight to the operation. "I will end

EFCC Abandons Fani-Kayode Money Laundering Case

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on Thursday closed its case in the trial of Femi Fani-Kayode, charged with money laundering, while serving as Minister of Aviation . Fani-Kayode, a former Minister of Aviation, is standing trial on an amended 40-count charge bordering on money laundering, before a Federal High Court sitting in Lagos. When the case was mentioned on Thursday, the prosecution counsel, Mr Festus Keyamo, through a letter delivered by Mr Vitalis Ahaotu, informed the court of the closure of its case. The defence counsel, Mr Wale Akoni (SAN), did not object to the letter by the Prosecution. He, however, informed the court of his intention to file a no-case submission to the charges against his client. Consequently, Justice Rita-Ofili Ajumogobia gave the defence 21 days within which to file their application before the court and ordered the prosecution to respond within seven days, on receipt of the process. She adjourned the case till Oct. 28 for

Regarded as one of the world’s finest talents, Sanchez has just returned from the World Cup in Brazil, where he played an integral role in Chile qualifying from their group (which included the Netherlands, Spain and Australia) and reaching the round of 16. During the tournament, Sanchez scored two goals from his four appearances. The striker, who has now made 71 appearances for Chile, scoring 24 goals, started his career with Cobreloa, based in Calama in north Chile, where he spent a season before moving to Santiago-based Colo-Colo, where he won the Chilean Primera Division in 2007. ASUU-LASU Sign Agreement To End Strike

The Lagos State University Authority and the institution’s chapter of the Academic Staff Union of Universities [ASUU-LASU] have signed an agreement that would signal the end of the strike embarked upon by the latter in May, 2014. This was contained in a statement signed by the Public Relation Officer of the institution, Kayode Sutton. In an exhaustive meeting which ran into the wee hours of Tuesday, July 8, 2014, the two parties reached a truce and put pen on paper on some of the issues, which led to the strike that partially grounded academic activities in the institution for several weeks. The university management team, led by the Vice Chancellor, Prof. John Oladapo Obafunwa, and the staff union led by Dr. ‘Kunle Idris, after the deliberations, resolved to sheathe their swords for peace to reign in LASU in the interest of the students and the entire university community. The meeting ended with the parties shaking hands and exchanging pleasantries. The meeting noted that the

BUSTED: Nigerian Arrested In India With Cocaine

Image
A Nigerian national was arrested in Delhi, India, for trafficking 70 grammes of cocaine, the police in the Asian country said yesterday. Okafor Ejike, 32, a resident of Lagos, was arrested Tuesday afternoon near the Karol Bagh Metro station in west Delhi where he had gone to deliver the consignment to his contacts. Ejike told interrogators he was lured into the drug illicit trade by a fellow Nigerian named Chikoje, who left Delhi for Nigeria in June. “Ejike came to Mumbai on a business visa in March 2013 and arrived in Delhi five months ago,” said the Joint Commissioner of Police, Ravindra Yadav. Yadav said after reaching Delhi, he was living in Dwarka and started export of readymade garments to Nigeria where his sister used to sell them in the local market. “As the garment business was not doing well, Ejike landed in financial crisis. Meanwhile, he met Chikoje who lured him into the drug business. He used to supply drugs in various shopping malls and other crowded markets

Play-off game is pointless: Van Gaal

Dutch manager does not see need for a third-place playoff and regrets not being able to use Tim Krul in the semis. The Netherlands will face Brazil in Saturday's third-place play-off but it is not a match the Dutch want to play, with coach Louis van Gaal saying it was a pointless exercise that "has nothing to do with sports". The Netherlands lost to Argentina on penlaties and will face host nation Brazil, who were hammered 7-1 by Germany in the other semi on Tuesday. "I think this match should never be played and I've been saying this for 10 years," Van Gaal said. "It is unfair we have one day less to recover than our opponent so that is not fair play either. "But the worst thing is I believe that chances are that you lose twice in a row. And a tournament in which you've played so marvelously well you would go home as a loser just because you could possibly have lost the last two matches and this has got nothing to do with sports in my

Toll mounts as Israel steps up Gaza air raids

Eight members of Palestinian family, including five children, among 88 dead so far, with no casualties on Israeli side. Israeli warplanes kept up deadly raids on Gaza but failed to stop rocket fire across the border, as the United States offered to help negotiate a truce. As the violence worsened, US President Barack Obama said his government was willing to broker a ceasefire in a phone call to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Obama said he was concerned the fighting could escalate and "called for all sides to do everything they can to protect the lives of civilians", the White House said. At least 88 Palestinians, most of them civilians, have been killed in Israeli bombardment of the Gaza Strip, Palestinian officials say, as talk of a possible Israeli ground offensive gathers momentum. In the deadliest attack since the start of the invasion on Tuesday, eight Palestinian family members, including five children, were killed in an early-morning air raid that

Argentina to play Germany in World Cup final

The South Americans reach Sunday's final after beating the Netherlands on penalty kicks in the second semi-final. Argentina beat the Netherlands 4-2 on penalties to reach the World Cup final after a dire two hours of defence-dominated football failed to provide a semi-final goal for the first time in the tournament's history. Argentina goal-keeper Sergio Romero saved Ron Vlaar's first penalty then made a superb diving save to deny Wesley Sneijder, allowing Maxi Rodriguez to crash home the decisive kick as his side converted all four of their penalties. The game was a forgettable one as the Dutch struggled to build any meaningful attacks and completed 90 minutes without a shot on target as Arjen Robben's last-minute effort was brilliantly blocked by Javier Mascherano. Argentina were not much more adventurous and had only a handful of half-chances to their name as, in total contrast to Tuesday's match when Germany waltzed through a wide open Brazil to win 7-1,
