ASUP/COEASU Strike: Police Arrest, Detain Protesting Students In Lagos

ABOUT 50 protesting students of polytechnics and colleges of education were, on Wednesday, arrested by the police and detained in police stations in Yaba, Lagos.
The students had organised a mass protest to air their grievrances over the failure of government to meet the demands of the striking Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP) and Colleges of Education Academic Staff Union (COEASU), which had led to closure of the institutions nationwide.
According to reports gathered by the Nigerian Tribune, the students, numbering about 1,000, were harrassed and repressed with tear gas by the police at Alagomeji in Yaba, during the protest which started from Yaba College of Technology.
The arrested students were detained at Adekunle and Sabo police stations, both in Yaba.
Meanwhile, the Joint Action Front (JAF), whose members were part of the mass protest organised by the Concerned Students against Education Commercialisation (COSATEC), have condemned the repression of the peaceful protest, culminating in the arrest and brutality of the over 50 students, activists, and journalists.
According to reports gathered, some of the buses that carried students during the procession were not spared, as their windscreens were shattered. A renowned reporter with the Sahara Reporters, Mr Segun Akinpelu, was also a victim of the attack as he was beaten up, with his camera and other recording gadgets destroyed.
