Hand new Oyingbo Market to us, traders tell Ambode

Alhaja Basira Balogun, the women leader in Oyingbo market, on Thursday appealed to Governor Akinwunmi Ambode to hand over the new market complex to traders.

Balogun told NAN in Lagos that the handing over was long overdue since the market was inaugurated in March.

She said that the former governor, Babatunde Fashola, could not fulfil his promise to hand over the new market complex before leaving office.

“Fashola delivered on his campaign promise to build the market and we are happy, but we do not know why he could not hand the market over to us after it was commissioned.

“We complained to the Lagos State Ministry of Works and Infrastructure which promised that Gov. Babatunde Fashola was going to hand it over.

“My market members have been asking questions on when they can move into the shops, some of them feel so disappointed.

“We want the new administration to officially hand the market over to us,” she said.

She, however, said that lack of adequate drainage channels around the entire market was causing flooding whenever it rained.

The market leader appealed to Ambode to construct drainage channels around the entire market to avert flooding.

NAN, however, learnt that Fashola could not hand over the market to traders because of incomplete documentation.

Oyingbo market came into existence in 1920s as a depot for farm products and grew to a commercial centre.

Past administrations came up with initiatives to develop the market, but the Fashola administration awarded the contract to Messers PALMYRA to rebuild the market in 2009.

Fashola inaugurated the three-storey ultra-modern market on March 15.

The complex has 902 lock-up shops, 49 open offices and 134 toilets.

Other facilities in the complex include 150-capacity car park, water, sewage and refuse treatment plants, fire safety gadgets, heavy duty generators and six gate houses, among others.

ABUJA , (Reuters) – Nigeria’s President Muhammadu Buhari on Wednesday held his first meeting with campaigners calling for the release of more than 200 schoolgirls abducted by Boko Haram militants in the northeastern town of Chibok last year. Don’t scrap Office of First Lady, says Prophetess

A women rights crusader, Prophetess Nonny Robertson, on Tuesday criticised calls by some people for the scrapping of the Office of the First Lady by President Muhammadu Buhari. Robertson said in a statement in Abuja on Tuesday that the decision of the critics was not in the best interest of women. “It is wrong to scrap the Office of the First Lady because it is mere semantics as the wife of the president remains what she is whether designated a First Lady or not. “Calling for the scrapping of the office would adversely affect the fortunes of women and their expected contributions to nation building,” the statement said.
