Reps urge police to investigate death of corps members

The House of Representatives on Wednesday, urged the Police to investigate injuries and untimely death of some National Youth Service Corps members (NYSC) in the country.

The Reps made the when it unanimously adopted a motion moved by Kingsley Chinda (Rivers-PDP), during the first plenary session of 8th House of Reps sitting in Abuja.

Kingley, who moved the motion under matter of urgent national importance, said it was to protect NYSC members and review their terms of service.

He added that the motion took cognizance of the fact that some corps members had suffered injuries and untimely deaths in their host states.

Rep. Uzoma Nkem-Abonta (Abia-PDP), called on government to take extra measures to ensure the protection of corps members.

Rep. Sani Zoro (Jigawa-APC), said the Act that established all uniform institutions like the Nigerian Army should be reviewed as well to enhance their efficiency.

NAN recalls that one corps member, Akpanira Frampton, was murdered on June 6 in Imo.

Speaker of the House, Yakubu Dogara, asked members to observe one minute silence for all the NYSC members that had lost their lives in parts of the country.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), reports that the House adjourned sitting to June 23.

Buhari meets BBOG campaigners, says military doing its best

ABUJA , (Reuters) – Nigeria’s President Muhammadu Buhari on Wednesday held his first meeting with campaigners calling for the release of more than 200 schoolgirls abducted by Boko Haram militants in the northeastern town of Chibok last year. The militant Islamist group, whose six-year insurgency has seen thousands killed in Africa’s most populous nation and top oil producer, caused an international outcry when it took the girls from secondary school dormitories in April 2014. Don’t scrap Office of First Lady, says Prophetess

A women rights crusader, Prophetess Nonny Robertson, on Tuesday criticised calls by some people for the scrapping of the Office of the First Lady by President Muhammadu Buhari. Robertson said in a statement in Abuja on Tuesday that the decision of the critics was not in the best interest of women. “It is wrong to scrap the Office of the First Lady because it is mere semantics as the wife of the president remains what she is whether designated a First Lady or not. “Calling for the scrapping of the office would adversely affect the fortunes of women and their expected contributions to nation building,” the statement said.
