Power Supply Hits 4105MW As Generation Continues Recovery
The Federal Government Wednesday announced that power generation in the country has again hit 4,109 megawatts.
This was contained in a statement in Abuja signed by Kande Daniel, the Special Assistant on Media to the Minister of Power, Prof. Chinedu Nebo.
The Nigerian power sector had suffered major setback in the past three months with generation capacity dropping from 4,500MW to barely 3,000 megawatts despite sale of assets to private operators.
Government had explained that the drop was due largely to dried hydro dams across the federation and insufficient gas supply to energise the power turbines.
But the recent developments recorded in the power sector, according Mrs. Daniel are already being felt in several areas as reports from parts of the country indicate that Nigerians now enjoy a measure of improvement in power supply in their homes, offices and business areas.
She attributed the situation to reduction in system collapses, as well as improvement in service delivery, among other things.
Mrs. Daniel said after Grid Information was released Wednesday, that the country’s generation capacity peaked up to 4105.90mw as at Tuesday.
The statement further revealed a breakdown of how the generated capacity was shared, with the nation’s in RAJI
dustrial nerve-centre Lagos and environs, getting the highest, with a maximum load totaling 985.0mw, while the maximum load allocated to Abuja through Katampe and Gwagwalada power line was 410.80mw.
Meanwhile, the nation’s generation capacity as at early Wednesday stood at 3795.30mw even as figures for the past few days indicate an average of about 3,800mw.
The latest Grid Information has however doused insinuations in some quarters that power generation had dropped to less than 2,000mw. It also observed that the general view since mid-last week suggests that many households now enjoy enhanced power supply in their domain unlike the experience in the recent past when vandals tampered with several power installations in parts of the country.
The statement, however, re-affirms government’s resolve to consolidate efforts at removing all bottlenecks to sufficiency in power supply.
It also conveys a fresh appeal from the Minster of Power to Nigerians for more patience and understanding, assuring that the emerging electricity market would stabilise and power supply would improve steadily.
