You Need to Read This!!! by Dele Momodu

God certainly has a hand in the affairs of human beings. My dream was to work at at the Guardian newspaper Group. Through my friend Onukaba, an attempt was made to get a job but the Editor I met at The Guardian said he couldn't employ me.
I left the place dejected and was ready to return to Ife empty handed when Onukaba told me to try the Concord newspapers owned by Chief Moshood Abiola.
Let me confess that I didn't particularly fancy the paper based on all manner of rumours against Chief Abiola. In 1988, Chief Abiola must have been one of the most abused Nigerians. There were fables concocted around him.
I agreed to try Concord out of acute frustration. I was told Abiola ran Concord as an Islamic enclave and there were too many dos and don'ts.
At Concord I met the Editor of African Concord magazine, Mr Lewis Obi, an incredibly brilliant man. He said he already knew me by my writings in other newspapers and he was ready to employ me instantly. I couldn't believe my good fortune.
I resumed work on May 1, 1988 and discovered that my bias against Chief Abiola, based on stupid hearsay was mostly unfounded. The Concord was one of the freest places I ever worked. Abiola rewarded hard work and nurtured talents. He exposed us to the best tenets of journalism and employed most of the best hands around. We had a bush canteen, where we ate and even drank alcohol. Many of the workers if not most were Christians and non-Yorubas. Chief Abiola as a mortal was not a perfect man but was certainly a good and kind-hearted man.
The lesson is don't kill your own dream by hating people you don't know.
Chief Abiola's Concord changed my life forever...
