Protect girl-child, NGO urges NASS

A Non-Governmental Organisation, Girl-Child Rights Awareness Initiative in Africa, has urged the 8th National Assembly to prioritise girl-child protection.

The Executive Director of the NGO, Mrs. Ajibola Temitope, made the plea in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria in Osogbo.

Temitope said the girl-child in Nigeria had become vulnerable and highly prone to danger and all forms of molestation and harassment.

The NGO boss, who recalled the case of the abducted Chibok girls, called for legislation to protect defenceless young females.

“As we welcome the newly inaugurated lawmakers, we consider it important to remind them of the urgent need to protect the girl-child and motherhood in general.

“We want the 8th National Assembly to quickly pass a law that will insulate the girl-child against any form of humiliation, harassment and intimidation.

“We are saddened by the level of humiliation and inhumane treatment the girl-child has been subjected to in the last couple of years,” she said.

Virgin Australia plane forced to land in Bali over fears of a hijack

A Virgin Australia plane (pictured above after it landed in Bali) was forced to land on the island of  Bali over fears of a possible hijack. Initially reports said the plane, which was flying from Australia and carrying 150 passengers, was being hijacked, but it was later found to be an aggressive drunk passenger who was trying to force his way into the cockpit. The pilot sent a distress signal to airport authorities and the plane was cleared to land in Bali so the situation could be dealt with. BBC reports that immediately the plane landed, the drunk passenger, who had been overpowered by the crew and handcuffed him, was arrested at the airport. Virgin Australia told ABC News that there has been a medical emergency aboard the plane but everything had been settled though the aircraft still remains on the tarmac at Bali’s Denpasar airport.

US Imposes Sanctions On Uganda Over Anti-gay Law

The US has imposed sanctions on Uganda for anti-gay laws it says are "counter to universal human rights". It said Ugandans involved in human rights abuses against gay people would be banned from entering the US. The White House is also cutting funds to a number of programmes it is running with the Ugandan authorities, and cancelling a military exercise. Uganda has said it will not be pressed by the West to change the laws, which can see gay people jailed for life. The law signed in February allows life imprisonment for acts of "aggravated homosexuality" and criminalises the "promotion of homosexuality".
