Jose Mourinho sends surprising message to Chelsea fans about Man United signing

Jose Mourinho has admitted that he was surprised to have been able to sign Nemanja Matic for Manchester United this summer.

The Red Devils completed a deal to bring the Serbia international to Old Trafford this summer after Chelsea agreed to sell the 29-year-old to their direct Premier League title rival.

The move came as something of a surprise to many, as Matic was a key player in helping Chelsea win the Premier League title last season.

The Serbian midfielder, however, was thought to be keen on a move to Manchester United himself and to link up with his former manager Mourinho.

And the Portuguese coach has now lifted the lid on how Matic called him to tell him that a move to Manchester United was on the cards this summer.

Mourinho is quoted as saying by the Daily Mirror: “I was not thinking of signing Matic because I never go for players who I think are an impossible mission to sign. I felt that there would be no chance.

“So when I got the call that Matic wants to play for me and wants to play for Manchester United – and that we could make it happen – I thought he’s the perfect player for me.

“When I joined United last year I thought immediately that we needed a Matic. There aren’t many like him. Just a couple. He is one of those players who has no question marks over him.

“He won’t need time to adapt. He isn’t a young guy who comes from another country or needs to learn the Premier League.

“Only last week he was 29, with five years in the Premier League and lots of experience. And he is one of those players who gives me what I like: consistency. I can trust that he will perform.

“He is a fantastic signing.”

Mourinho and Matic have already enjoyed successful seasons together, with the pair having won the Premier League and League Cup together during the 2014-15 campaign.

Manchester United will be aiming to challenge for the Premier League title this season after their disappointing sixth placed finish last term.

The Red Devils have signed Matic, Victor Lindelof and Romelu Lukaku so far this summer.
